Our group has been keeping very busy recently! We have been selected as the 1st place winners of the NJ Shout Down Drugs competition, we sang The Star Spangled Banner for the New York Mets season opening day, and 3 out of 4 of our members recently graduated high school and have all enrolled in our respective colleges (except for our soon to be high school junior Brad). It is safe to say that we have a lot of things going on in Whiptone World! Lets take a closer look!
New York Mets National Anthem:
This was the opportunity of a lifetime! At first, we didn't think we could even make the audition, as none of our parents were available to drive us that day. But we found ourselves to be very fortunate with the help of a friend's mother who volunteered to deliver the Whiptones to Queens, New York! It was a cold November day, and we spent countless hours waiting outside for our audition, but when the time finally came, we were pent up with excitement, and we truly gave it everything we had. The results showed when we got the call a few weeks later that we were finalists in the competition! Now the real work began. Every day we vigorously practiced, tweaked, and fine-tuned our arrangement of the national anthem. After several months of balancing and tuning, we were ready for our final audition. Later that day of the audition, we found out that all our time and our efforts were well spent, as we had been selected as the winners of the 2014 NY Mets Anthem Search. When we arrived at Citifield for the third time on the morning of the game, the weather was bleak; cold, rainy, and even snowy. But much to our surprise, when we came out to sing the Anthem, the sun was shining, the clouds had parted, and the crowd was roaring. Those few minutes were some of the most amazing moments of our entire lives, and we shall remember them for as long as we live. It was truly the opportunity of a lifetime.
New Jersey Shout Down Drugs Competition:
This was our next competitive endeavor, something a little different from the Whiptone norm. For the first time, The Whiptones decided to use instruments to complement our vocal harmonies, and we were very pleased with the results! Our award winning song, Doin' Drugs Aint' Dope was written and recorded for an annual competition called Shout Down Drugs, which challenges the youth of New Jersey to write original songs against substance abuse. (http://www.shoutdowndrugs.com/) Our song was actually recorded in one late night session that lasted until 4:30 am! That was definitely a night to remember. Once again, our efforts had paid off, as we were selected as finalists in the competition. We went down to the NJ PAC in Newark, where we performed our song along with 21 other high school individuals and groups from all over New Jersey. At the end of the night we stood victorious with our trophy and our keytar. This marked another great milestone in the Whiptones career, and it was certainly a night we will never forget. Recently we have been touring to spread our anti-drug message; we even made a music video of our song! Check it Out!
A Doowoppin' Graduation:
Three out of our four group members recently graduated high school and will be off to our various collegiate pursuits in the fall. Mike is going to Boston College, Der(e)k is going to The University of South Carolina, and Matt is going to Lehigh University. One day in school, we were approached by our principal, who requested that we speak to him in his office, which is always a slightly intimidating request. However, our fears were reversed into excitement when he asked us if we would be willing to sing at our very own graduation ceremony! We decided to take to the quill as we scripted new lyrics for an original song entitled The Best Time of Our Lives, which described and looked back on our high school experience. When we performed our song at graduation, we were very well received, making an amazing day even better. This experience was an unbelievable thrill and an incredible honor that we will remember for the rest of our lives.
We certainly have been keeping busy in Whiptone World, and that's the way we like it! Looking forward, the Whiptones have a whole lot in store, and we are pushing to release our newest album by Lead East 2014! But more on that next time. Hope you've enjoyed this blog post, keep an eye out for more to come!
First of all, we wish everyone of our fans a Merry Christmas! We hope that everyone has a safe and happy holiday. Although 2013 isn't quite over yet, we would like to take a moment to look back on this past year. This has been the most successful, and fun year so far for The Whiptones! From winning Don K. Reed's Doo Wop Acapella contest and performing in the IZOD CENTER, to singing at the Beacon Theatre, to performing in front of over 10k people at the PNC Bank Arts Center, this is certainly a year to remember. We even released a new album with 10 high quality studio tracks at our 3rd Lead East! We had great responses from all of our fans this year and we had a ton of fun bringing some great Doo Wop acapella music to the world! We owe all of our success to our fans and we cannot thank you all enough.
3 of the 4 Whiptones are seniors in high school and have been very busy with college applications. We have had very little time to perform, but the sophomore Bass singer of the group, Bradley Ritschel, has prepared a Barbershop acapella version of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas Now" to make up for the small hiatus the group has had to take to apply to colleges. We hope you enjoy the video. See you all at THE MOHEGAN SUN CASINO on JANUARY 19th, 2014. The event link is https://www.facebook.com/events/1405662282996700/
2nd Album Released at Lead East & MORE!
We had a blast this Lead East. From performing in the ballroom and acappella show, to strolling around and singing to small groups of our fans it was great to be back home! We can't believe its been 2 years since we formed and a year since we won the Doo Wop Idol contest at Lead East. It was great to see Wolfman and the whole Lead East crew again.
We finally got to release our 2nd Album-THE WHIPTONES: KEEPIN' THE MUSIC ALIVE with 10 tracks! We had a great response from our audience and its now available at our website store. We gotta go do our summer homework now, we have school in a few days, but thanks for a great weekend!
